Cycle touring South Australia's Eyre Peninsula: Smoky Bay to Streaky Bay (70-71kms)
November 15th 2006 23:58
When leaving the Smoky Bay Caravan Park, we heard about a couple of English girls who had intended to cycle round the Eyre Peninsula then to Sydney in a week. They'd tallied up the distance on the map using the finger method (as opposed to the looking at the key) and come up with a distance that, to them, looked around a few hundred kilometres.
The proprietor had had to break it to them that the distance was a lot further than it looked and that, unless they were nicknamed Lance, they'd need to catch a bus or miss their flight home. Beware the finger method!
The Flinders Highway continues as it begins with more rough roads, rolling hills and dry paddocks. The closer you get to Streaky Bay the higher you climb and there are water views over Perlublie Beach and Streaky Bay.
As on the Nullarbor there are no facilities between Smoky Bay and Streaky Bay but this shouldn't cause too much hardship since the distance is so much shorter. Streaky Bay is a lot larger than Smoky Bay with a good range of shops, a bakery, supermarkets and a couple of cafes.
The Streaky Bay Foreshore Tourist Park is a little out of town and has nice shady sites right on the beach. There is a camp kitchen and a kiosk and it is right across the road from the local school which has free internet access during school hours.
