Cycling from Bluff Knoll to Ongerup (approx 60kms) or Jerramungup (approx 100kms) in WA

October 26th 2006 01:59
All too soon you leave the shelter of the Stirling Ranges and hit the harsh, dry, yellow wheat fields. Get used to it! There isn't much else to look at between Bluff Knoll and Jerramungup.

On the way to Amelup, check out your rear view mirror. The Stirling Ranges are hulking over those shimmering yellow wheat fields. At the Amelup Store, on the other side of the Ranges, the silos begin and a sign warns that "Nudists are Crossing".

You must stop at the Dutch Windmill on your left hand side. The view from the cafe is one of the best in WA. The windmill and Dutch style units, where you can spend the night, were built by the multi-talented owner who also plays the grand piano in the cafe. The mill is in working order and you can tour it with the miller.

Borden, is also on the left hand side halfway to Ongerup. You can sit on a bench outside the general store and contemplate the giant grain store towering over the town.

The mostly unshaded road rolls into and out of dry creekbeds to Ongerup. Ongerup is where the bush starts and the town is reached via a side road on the right hand side. It doesn't look like much but the locals are friendly and there's a well stocked supermarket.

The caravan park is tiny, deserted and very pleasant with shaded, flat, grassy tent sites separated from the bush and salmon gums by a low stone fence. $12AUS/2pax/night.

If you've more energy than us you may wish to push on to Jerramungup. Jerramungup is larger, less friendly and a little less pleasant. The road continues much the same through wheatfields in and out of creekbeds under the hot sun with road trains.

Jerramungup has a supermarket and a petrol station which doubles as a cafe and a newsagency with books. There is a CTC with internet access but it was closed on the day we were there and only opens a few days a week so don't count on it.

The caravan park was full of roadworkers. It is geared toward caravans. That means; stony, ant ridden grounds. There is rubbish near the "tent" sites plus noisy chooks. A rip off at $20AUS/2pax/night but necessary unless you want to ride 164kms to Ravensthorpe or would prefer a night in the scrub.
